Searching for a Generator

My job today as an unemployed wife was to scout out generators. Living in a hurricane prone area we have decided to purchase one. We've looked at the big box stores and they have the loud generators starting at about $600 and going up depending on your desired size.

Today I was in search of a Honda and Yamaha dealers. I found both and also found that to get a quiet generator which both of these offer will cost us well over $1000. Boy I know more about generators than I ever thought possible from wattage required by every appliance in my house to inverters to noise level.

So now tonight we have to discuss what to do. We really don't have the money for either. But I have gone through a minor hurricane where I did not have electricity for over 48 hours. This is nothing I know compared to the folks in LA, MS in 2004. But because of this I want to be as prepared as possible.

Our budget with me not working says the cheap version, but for all around use the more expensive ones might be more handy.

We will have to see what the man who makes the $$$ says.
