Jimmy Carter National Historic Site
On the way this weekend to visit my niece in Columbus, GA my husband and I passed by a sign that said Plains, GA. I made a comment like "Wow there is Plains GA" and my husband said what so special about Plains. I was astonished that he didn't know the town. Growing up in the 70's even though he wasn't in the South I assumed he had heard of it.
When we got to my nieces and were deciding what to do on Saturday, I mentioned Plains and my niece was excited to go visit the historic site.
It was a beautiful Spring Georgia day when we pulled up to the Plains High School that is now a museum for President Carter and his family. From there we went to eat at "Mom's Kitchen" where I am told by my touring partners the best onion rings they have ever eaten are made. We drove by the depot that served as the Carter Campaign headquarters and headed to the boyhood farm of the Carters.
Whether Democrat or Republican I think it is important to visit our historic sites that pay homage to our history. In fact I am surprised some tour company hasn't devised a tour of President's home.
